Artisans: 1450-1650

The music is Morisco music, found on Iberian Garden, Vol. 1 by Altramar. The piece is Muwashshah: Mā li-l-muwallah, 1113-1198.

This music takes place at the beautiful gardens along the Guadalquiver, near Cordoba. This is during the "convivencia" under Alfonso X (El Sabio - The Wise), the time before Granda fell: when Christians, Moslems and Jews lived at peace with each other. Muwashshah are songs in poetic form, with instrumental interludes in the form of Ibn Bājja (Avempace): 1470-1520. This is Morisco art.

What did the Iberian city look like c. 15th century? Aside from soldiers, and shipyards ("drassanes" in Barcelona), there were artisans and peasant farmers. Some detail would be useful. "Jurats" 1 means artisans, "Joves" means journeymen. Artisans fell into two classes or estaments (estates): "artists" 2 and "menestrals". In addition to Jurats and Jovens, there also were merchants a rellotgers (keeper of the city clock) and blacksmiths. Of course, no state can exist without others: poble menut (hoi polloi), prohoms (elders), and remençes (serfs), prisoners, criminals, undesirables (Gipsies, Jews, Galleotes, Huguenots, Moriscos, etc.) 3
